Scrap Metal Recycling plant fire in Cross Green Leeds

Leeds and Hunslet fire crews were called to the fire at Knowsthorpe Way, Cross Green, Leeds at 12:45hrs today. The fire was visible for miles around Leeds due to the large amount of smoke given off. Appliances were backed up by further appliances from Killingbeck to make this a five pump fire.

The area involved, 20m x 20m was surrounded by fire crews using 3 ground monitors and 2 Hand held jets. 

A mechanical grabber was used to move away metal waste around the site for access and enable firefighters to access the fire.

Knowsthorpe way has since been closed whilst crews deal with the incident which is likely to be a protracted job due to its nature.

As this incident was a MP x 5 the Brigades new Command Unit Lite attended the incident. This unit is based at Fairweather Green fire station in the Bradford District.

Appliances attended from Hunslet(2), Leeds (1), Killingbeck (2) and Command Unit and Welfare Unit from Fairweather Green.

Fire in Paper recycling depot, Quarry Hill Industrial Estate, Horbury

Fire crews from Wakefield, Ossett and Dewsbury attended a fire on the Quarry Hill Industrial Estate at Hawkingcroft road Horbury late this afternoon (29/05/2015). This was an open yard containing bales of waste with smoke from the fire being seen for miles around. 

Severe fire on arrival of crews

Traffic congestion was created on Bridge road close to the scene, with smoke drifting from the fire.  There were fears the fire could spread to nearby Buildings, trees and a caravan storage yard close by. 

Fire crews use jets to control the fire

Fire crews used 2 large jets 1 Ground monitor and 2 Hosereels to fight the fire which crews prevented reaching any of the exposure risks. The fire is now under control with senior advisors leaving the incident.

Damping down in progress

Damping down is continuing with the incident scaled down. The previous fire at Halifax is still ongoing with appliances attending revisits to the site of Envirowaste. This is the second fire involving waste products in 2 days.

Update !! Fire at former St.Michaels College, Leeds

Fire crews from around the Leeds district attended the old college site on St. Johns Rd. Woodhouse in Leeds at around 8.20pm yesterday 26/05/2014.

The top two floors of the property were well alight when the first crews arrived. There was smoke logging to many other parts of the building. Breathing apparatus teams were deployed inside to ventilate.

Crews mainly used water from the Aerial appliance from Leeds to tackle the flames. People living near the old college site said flames were pouring from the upper floors.

The fire could be seen across Leeds as the flames turned to clouds of smoke. Fire crews are still damping down at the scene where Police closed the road to traffic.

Leeds council planning chiefs had turned down plans for a £40m scheme to revamp the building earlier this month.
The plans would have also seen the original 1908 college building preserved as part of a mixed scheme for apartments and student flats but there were fears that the apartments would be too small.
