The A1 motorway in West Yorkshire was closed today after collisions took place along it's stretch between junctions 44 and 46 on the Northbound carriageway.

The first incident, around 11:00am involving a lorry and a car, happened between junctions 45 and 46. One man was sadly confirmed dead at the scene of this incident where his vehicle appeared to have run into the rear of an Articulated Heavy Goods Vehicle. All services attended the scene Police, Fire and Ambulance crews. Casualties were trapped in vehicles at both scenes and an appliance from Tadcaster attended at one of the incidents. The Technical rescue team from Cleckheaton were also drafted in to assist.
The second was just after 11.30am near to junction 43 and is believed to have involved four vehicles. Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the scene with a doctor to assist with the casualties during there extracation

The northbound carriageway of the motorway was shut from 11am at junction 44 at Leeds and re-opened just after 4pm.
Anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed the collision or either vehicle prior to the collision is asked to call the West Yorkshire police major collision investigation unit by calling 101 from any telephone.
