FIRE crews from West and North Yorkshire were today tackling a blaze at Wetherby Racecourse. The call to the fire service at around 10:00 am today (05/05/2013) saw the fire involve part of a storage building next to the racecourse’s
grandstand which was well alight.
A spokesman for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue
Service said a gas leak was also said to have been identified in the grandstand itself.
There was a carboot sale ongoing within the race course grounds at the time of the incident. The Police helicopter attended to search the area for any persons likely to be connected to the arson incident, but onlookers and people at the sale made this a difficult operation.
Appliances from Wetherby, Moortown, Stanks and Gipton were called and support was also given by Tadcaster (North Yorkshire)
