Severe Fire in Castleford Centre


The fire at the multi occupancy building on Wesley Street in Castleford town Centre started at around 2.30 pm today (16/03/14). The complex was a furniture store and a taxi office and garage complex. Thick smoke could be clearly seen from the M62 motorway.

Eight appliances and 2 Aerial Ladder Platforms were sent to the blaze.

Breathing apparatus teams were called in to urgent action to search a furniture store for any possible missing persons at the complex as smoke pours from windows.

A severe fire developed and streets were closed off as firefighters dealt with the incident. 
The building was approx 20m x 25m and crews used 2 ALP monitors, 1 Ground Monitor, 1 Large jet, Hosereel jets and Breathing apparatus sets.

Appliances from Leeds, Wakefield, Garforth, Gipton, Hunslet, Rothwell, Stanningley, Normanton and Castleford are a few of the stations that attended.

A Hose laying appliance was brought in to ensure that adequate water was available on the fireground. Roads were closed and surrounding streets cordoned off by police.

Crews remain on the scene at present damping down, with fears that the gable end of the building could collapse.
