West Yorkshire Fire Service received a call to Huddersfield Road, Ravensthorpe at 5:45pm this evening and responded with two appliances from Dewsbury. On arrival of the first crews this incident was made up to three pumps and an Aerial appliance. The building had been empty for some time and was well alight.
Crowds gathered to watch as fire teams dealt with the incident. The Huddersfield Road was closed for traffic travelling towards Mirfield and a diversion set up around the site.
The building involved was previously used as a store and auction house, and is part two and part single storey. Dewsbury Auctions was a long-established family firm set up by Oscar Crow in 1947. It continued to be run by the Crow family until the business closed around two years ago, since when the building has remained empty.
The incident was sectorised as crews used 3 Large jets, a Ground Monitor, 2 Breathing apparatus and a jet from the CARP aerial appliance.
The fire has been contained to it's building of origin with crews likely to be in attendance for sometime yet damping down hot spots. Crews will remain tonight to dampen down with a revisit on Monday morning by the structural engineer. The main Huddersfield road will remain closed westbound towards Mirfield until inspections are completed.
Appliances attended from Dewsbury (2), Mirfield (1) and the CARP from Huddersfield station.
