High Winds Response in West Yorkshire ( 5th December 2013 )


Between 07:30hrs and 15:00hrs today WYFR Control received 186 calls, approximately 60 of the calls were to dangerous structures. These included calls to damaged roofs, trees fallen onto buildings and unsafe scaffolding. An attendance was made to approximately 55 of these calls with most being officer only attendances with no further action being required.
Appliances attended approx 20 incidents with Aerial appliances attending three of the reported incidents.

Fire crews were called at around 09:30 to a Dangerous structure at the  Bramley District Shopping Centre, Town Street, Bramley, Leeds.This was a partial collapse of a timber framed wall of the building and danger of a section of the roof detaching from the building. The shopping centre was evacuated and emergency planning officers were requested to assist with evacuation of nearby houses which could potentially have been hit if the roof blew off. The whole area was evacuated and cordoned off after the  collapse.Crews assisted Police and emergency planning in giving advice to local residents and a Structural engineer also attended.

Three pumps were required as large pieces of cladding on a roof at Twenty Twenty Flats, Skinner Lane, Leeds was blown off. The incident was made safe with crews using line rescue equipment, cutting away and removing aluminium cladding which had been hanging from roof of the apartments.
Appliances from Leeds, Moortown and Stanks were required.
