Large Tyre Recycling Fire in Sherburn in Elmet





Distance shot gives perspective to the size of the incident


Fire crews attended the scene (16/01/2014) at 08:37 to reports of a fire at the tyre recycling plant. A large amount of tyres were alight at the old Gasgoine Wood mine. Crews initially used 3 hose reel jets to tackle the blaze, but further assistance was needed to try and control the blaze. The occupier of the site used a digger to create a fire break.Further appliances were requested sending a total of 14 fire appliances to the scene of this incident, along with a High Volume Pump which can move large quantities of water over a larger distance than a normal fire engine. 

Crews from all around North,and West Yorkshire were called in to try and stop the fire spreading to the whole site. Due to strong winds and the open rural location crews had to adopt a defensive mode of operation, surrounding the fire and protecting any nearby fire risks.
