Seventy firefighters are currently battling to get control of a blaze at a supermarket completely involved in fire. The Pakeezah Supermarket on Ingleby Road is currently on fire after a fire in the open, spread to the building. One crew was initially called out at 1.21pm this afternoon to the fire in the open, but it soon became clear that further resources would be required.

The building is approx 60m x 30m and single storey of light construction and described as being 100% involved in fire. The fire has broken through the roof in some parts of the building. The incident became a MP x 8 incident with appliances attending from Stanningley and as far away as Brighouse and Gipton in Leeds.

Crews have used 3 Large jets, 1 ALP Monitor jet, 2 Hosereel jets, Breathing apparatus and Positive Pressure Ventilation Fans (PPV).

Crews were having to be replaced on welfare grounds due to the heat both from the fire and the high temperatures caused by the summer weather.

A Police cordon has been put in place because of fears the fire could spread to the nearby Morrisons petrol station. Plumes of smoke from the fire can be seen in the city centre. Road closures remain in place with Ingelby road closed to traffic at this time.
