| ALP crew remove external chimney stack to prevent further collapse |
Firefighters from Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton were called to the scene at around 2.20pm Yesterday. The incident at a house on Thorncliffe Estate at Staincliffe in Batley involved a chimney that had collapsed within the property.
It is understood from local residents that the chimney was being removed by contractors when the collapse happened. Workers fled from the property but 1 male casualty was trapped.
Ambulance crews and police attended. The scene has been cordoned off by the police.
Crews made the building safe in order to affect a search for the trapped casualty.
Thorncliffe Estate in Staincliffe was closed in both directions as firefighters from Cleckheaton’s Technical rescue team and other firefighters searched the rubble for the trapped man
The next door neighbour who's home is attached to the semi detached property was evacuated on safety grounds.
Ambulance crews remained on standby whilst firefighters continued the search removing rubble as they progressed through the house, searching for the missing man
Police have confirmed today that a 23-year-old male has sustained fatal injuries caused in yesterdays chimney collapse on Thorncliffe Estate.
Police said enquiries are ongoing.
